the story
Set in the United States after 2008, A Journey, a Reckoning and a Miracle follows the stories of three fellow Americans:
Lucy, a seventeen-year-old Rapture believer travels on a pilgrimage from her home in Texas to honor the dead from massacres, such as occurred at Waco and Columbine. As she journeys by foot, motorcycle, horseback, canoe and Swift Boat, she meets other Americans who influence her beliefs and actions, which leads to a miracle.
Judith, a young black soldier severely injured in Iraq, remains well loved both by her boyfriend--whom she met before her injuries occurred—and her family, particularly her Christian but voodoo practicing grandmother. As Judith recovers, she regains her humor and voice in an age-old tradition, which leads to further healing for her and those who witness her acts.
With his term over, a fictional George Bush plans to relax, have fun and do some fundraising. But his plans go awry when he begins to have nightmares and visions in which he’s visited by a host of ghosts, including zombies, Mother Nature, Machiavelli, Schopenhauer, Alice of “Alice’s Restaurant” and a couple of former presidents. These entities begin to make him understand the magnitude of the atrocities he committed as president and push him towards transformation.
Informed as much by religion and politics as it is by adventure and humor, this magical story, A Journey, a Reckoning and a Miracle, reaches out to all. Almost everyone, if old enough, has had to change beliefs with new experiences, to acknowledge mistakes and make amends, and, in the face of terrible adversity, to summon the courage and creativity to try something new. As the characters in the story find out, this can happen with a little help from family, friends, history, myth, and higher powers, through the grace of imagination. Dedicated to the great powers of healing, A Journey, a Reckoning and a Miracle shows that sacrifice can help revive the American dream.
